This Berlin threesome is a kind of scaled-down brass band. The rough, energetic ensemble sound shows influences from free jazz and funk. The mixture is stirred and shaken, using the tried and tested New Orleans method. At the moment they’re really on a roll. This spring the Insomnia Brass Band was awarded the Deutschen Jazzpreis 2023: Band des Jahres! Drummer Christian Marien is also featured in the Saturday ZJFT programme with his own quartet, at the Allesboerderij near Garnwerd.
Ein Abend aus Berlin will be topped with the legendary band Ruf der Heimat. Leader Thomas Borgmann is still in charge of this outfit. His meaty tenor sound is reminiscent of Archie Shepp or Gato Barbieri. In the 1990s Peter Brötzmann and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowski were members of the huge sound that characterizes Ruf der Heimat. Thirty years on, the original Berlin jazz drummer Willi Kellers is still behind the cymbals. He remains the ideal percussionist to stir up the free jazz fire.
