Intro

For the 36th Summer Jazz Cycling Tour (ZJFT) we’ll be continuing with the fixed routes we had last year – the COVID edition with four bands per route. Last year, we heard many favourable comments about this new set-up. It offers the jazz cyclist a clear view and less choice overload, plus a guaranteed seat at the venues. At some points on the route, one has to choose between two delicacies, however. Just like it is with a restaurant menu. The new set-up also allows for a thematically organized afternoon, like in route 3, which features three vocalists in a row: Sanem Kalfa, Helene Richter (Farbenfroh) and Elise Caron. Or take route 4, the Han80 route, featuring the guest of honour himself, plus musicians with a connection to the ICP Orchestra. For jazz cyclists who like to avoid the beaten track, we introduce a Freejazz route, which allows you to pick four sets without sticking to a fixed route. Do take the cycling distances into consideration, however. And in the booking process you will notice that the number of seats is definitely limited.

We’re expecting some foreign visitors again this year: Wayne Horvitz/Sara Schoenbeck (from Seattle and New York). New York trombonist Steve Swell (with Jan Klare 3000) and another New Yorker, drummer Jim Black (based in Berlin, these days) with Canadian Miles Perkin’s international quartet, which also features star trumpeter Tom Arthurs from London.
There are also some interesting Frenchmen heading for the ZJFT. The extraordinary pianist Benoît Delbecq from Paris is a member of the Miles Perkin Quartet. With clarinettist Louis Sclavis and cellist Vincent Courtois we’ve booked a French super duo in Groningen. The duo will open the Friday Prologue in Simplon. A day later, they will meet bass clarinettist Fie Schouten and pianist Guus Janssen in Garnwerd. And we’ve invited the French percussionist Edward Perraud for a special concert in Ezinge with vocalist Elise Caron.

The exciting string trio The Selva hails from Lisbon. From Germany: Jan Klare 3000 and Carl-Ludwig Hübsch with his Longrun Development of the Universe. The Flat Earth Society represents Belgium, just like trumpeter Bart Maris (normally with FES, now with 3000) and Don Kapot (from Brussels). Route 1 not only offers this furious big band from Ghent, but also the many-headed Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (National Youth Jazz Orchestra).

The other 11 outfits taking part in the ZJFT 2022 all have Dutch connections. We should definitely mention the NNT/Nite project by Bab Ad-Daar. Just like the unexpected musical turns by Jeroen Kimman’s septet Orquesta Del Tiempo Perdido. Or Ada Rave’s performance with Luc Ex and his seven metres long Object Sonore at the Schaphalsterzijl locks.

Yes indeed, it’s too much to sum up. We remain the only festival for new jazz and improv where you are sure to miss more than half of the acts and you even have to cycle yourself.  And of course, the ZJFT would be impossible without the effort of the many volunteers. We would like to thank them from the bottom of our hearts.
